Hey all!!!! The big day is here....EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE!!! OMG!!! Today is MONUMENTAL!! I'm headed for the polls at 10AM!!! I just wanted to post a pic of the shirts Iota Phi got made just for this occasion!!!
Cute, huh?! Well, yeah!!! I'm a little anxious about voting...the lines are gonna be hella long...sheesh!! But it'll all be worth it once my boy is in office!!!
An aside: A few of my white child-hood friends are expressing some pretty strong and sorrowful opinions about today through their facebook statuses...I guess I would too if the shoe were on the other foot...so I'm not going to be TOO hard on them, but they need to chill out with all this "WHOA is ME" shit....whatever happens, happens!!! "Y'all ain't ready, Y'all Ain't Ready!!! What's up, What's up!!!" LOL!!

Will Michelle Obama be Wearing Pink and Green Soon?
You may wonder why I ask...well according to The Swamp (yeah, I know...), Mrs. Obama has been extended an invitation to join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. as an honorary member. This same honor was extended to Sen. Hillary Clinton who initially accepted, then declined the invitation, when she discovered that membership is exclusive and she wants to be able to work with all organizations in their endeavors. Cool Beans, whatever floats your boat. Now hold up, wait a minute. I love Michelle, and I'd love love love to call her soror, BUT, if you continue to read the article, Michelle (or better yet, her spokesperson) is under the impression that she will be allowed to "work with" the other Divine 9 sororities in the same capacity as a member (of each org). Uhh..no, that's not exactly how it works. BGLOs are inheritantly EXCLUSIVE, and once you are inducted, you are what you are. You can not work with other organizations as members of that org as well as another. It just doesn't work like that!
There seems to be a misunderstanding or a mistranslation of the situation, but since it has been reported that she accepted the invitation, she can not and will not be bestowed the same honor by the other NPHC sororities. Now if you read the comments below the article, many have been weighing in on whether or not Michelle should have accepted the invite into AKA. People think she should have remained neutral, at least until after her husband's seat in the white house was (is) secured. They say hasty judgement on her part, because she is further alienating herself from black women, black Greeks, etc.
I honestly don't know how I feel about the situation. She has not/will not be inducted during this week's activities during Boule'. Read this for more insight on that. The comments following this article are also pretty brutal. I don't know folks, but there is a lot of unecessary hate coming from other greeks and GDIs and I think it's kind of ridiculous. People say Michelle doesn't fit the bill, but I beg to differ. She is an intelligent, successfull woman--an attorney and political activist. She is also an outstanding role model for young women. I think she will be a wonderful addition to our list of honoraries. And even if Barack doesn't win the Presidential Election, Michelle can still inact change in her's and surrounding communities and be a wonderful viable asset to the sorority. Her husband's possible post as commander-in-chief may have inspired the decision to extend her an invitation, but at the end of the day, Michelle Obama is a great woman, regardless.
In the same vein, I think before accepting the invitation, she (or her spokesperson) should have done a little research and understood that there is no such thing as "non-exclusive" membership as an honorary member of an EXCLUSIVE sorority. As one person from a message board I frequent put it, "Cultural Competence". Maybe her spokesperson is responsible for this "mix-up" in that if the person is of another ethnicity/cultural background (because I will not ASSume that s/he is white), they may be speaking soley on non-experience and what they MAY think they know about GLOs. The spokesperson may think of AKA as the typical run-of-the-mill philanthropy/charity that anyone can be apart of, as opposed to a business boasting over 200,000 inducted EXCLUSIVE MEMBERS.
One thing is for sure, whether Michelle (or spokesperson) is confused or not, is that she should be able to work with all NPHC sororities, and BGLOs in general. Just as Greeks on college campuses should do more to UNITE for the COMMON CAUSE OF SERVICE (which is what I will be fighting to improve this year since I am Greek and henceforth a member of UAB NPHC), Greeks should allow her to assist in any endeavors she takes an interest in, regardless of her affiliation, ESPECIALLY if she becomes the First Lady. I believe that we are Greek first and foremost, and where affiliations, colors, and letters divide us--they should also unite us, because each letter is apart of a whole Greek alphabet, colors--our orgs DO NOT OWN, and affiliations should not stop us from working together for the betterment of our BLACK COMMUNITY!
In closing, to the naysayers, yeah, maybe she should have waited. But who knows for sure that she would get the chance to accept such an invitation ever again?! There was no AKA chapter at Princeton when she attended, so here's her chance, ya know. But wait...is she just accepting to be nice, does she even want to be an AKA?!!?! Maybe she does, and that's why the invite was extended to her in the first place...maybe this observation is a bit personal and unwarranted. I'm just hella curious tho...but I digress. I will keep my eyes and ears open as to what will further go down with this situation, and keep y'all posted. So yeah, Good day, mates. Tomorrow is FRIDAY!!!!!!

RIF (Research --and reading--) is FUNDAMENTAL!!!
Good Morning all, Happy Friday! Since the news of the AKA Barbie has become public knowledgde, I have noticed something. There seems to be TWO dolls...
I visited this blog last night, and the author was discussing the doll. Of course, since he was referencing my sorority, I took interest in what he had to say and even left a comment on the post. I looked at the doll he had on his blog and realized that the picture posted IS NOT the doll created by Mattel, but by Rochelle McAllister of Sisterhoodboutique.com and Madame Alexander®. Maybe I'm over thinking this thing too much, and maybe it's not that serious to some, but it's important to me, and I think that is what's causing a lot of confusion. The doll the blog author showcased is actaually named Ivy Rose™, and the 2008 version of this doll is scheduled to make her debut August 1, 2008. If you are at all interested in the DIFFERENCES between these dolls, please check the sisterhoodboutique site for more info. The link is here .
The reason for the title of this post is because a friend sent me a link to a story BET posted on their website about the doll, and of course they are showing Ivy Rose...not Barbie...I would think that whomever is over the BET blog would have better sense to research information before posting JUST anything. And it seems other sources have also gotten some of their info wrong. Research is Fundamental!!!! Please and thank you!
P.S. Ivy and Barbie don't even LOOK the same. Ivy doesn't have that trademark "Barbie" look ya know...I dunno. Oh well!

Being 100 NEVER looked so Good.
Tomorrow, thousands of my sorors will gather together in Washington, D.C. to celebrate the feat of reaching 100 years of SISTERHOOD and SERVICE to all mankind. I wish I could be there, but financial and other obligations weigh against me in this hope. However, it is my prayer that all sorors venturing to D.C. for the festivities have fun and are safe!!! Party for me, why don't cha?
Anyhoo... Taken from our National website :
One hundred years ago, Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. From July 11-18, members will return to the nation’s Capitol for the organization's 2008 Centennial BoulĂ©. During this biennial international meeting, the Sorority will celebrate its founding while working to achieve its business goals. It will also focus on mobilizing an informed and educated populace about the significance of the upcoming 2008 elections.
Activities will include:
Economic Service Partnership Unity March
Town Hall Society Forums
Ecumenical Service
Patti LaBelle Live in Concert
….and more!!!
Patti!!!!! Awww man! I know it's gonna be great! Enjoy, Sorors!!!
In other news:
Mattel, the makers of Barbie have honored us with the creation of an Alpha Kappa Alpha Centennial Barbie, the first doll to be modeled after any sorority (first and finest, always). She is adorable, precious and ALL OF THAT, and trust I will be buying one for myself and my fave soror (Auntie Helen) to cherish. The Chicago Sun Times has the story here .
SERIOUSLY, 100 NEVER looked SOOO GOOD!! Here's to another innovative, trend-setting 100 years! Skee-Wee, My Sorors!!

The Poetry Corner
The rain is coming down hard in the GUMP, and I am in such a creative mood. Inspiration comes from the strangest places, and I'm not quite sure where mine came from, but whatever. I shot out two poems today, and would like to share them!!!! The subject is my ILLUSTRIOUS ORGANIZATION, ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC.
1. ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA, DEAR!
Her first love may be DST
But that has not one thing to do with me.
My first love is of an “OH SO PRETTY” history
A legacy of sophistication, pride, and dignity.
Stuck-up, never. Classy, forever!
Conceited, not. It’s confidence that I’ve got!
My 20 pearls shine and glisten as I pass;
My founders ensured perpetuity
So that my wonderful sisterhood could last.
100 years strong, we’ve stood the test;
I know that Alpha Kappa Alpha is the best!
You don’t have to tell me, I already know.
Through service and sisterhood, our greatness shows.
You may think my choice was a mistake,
But no my friend, your thoughts, you, a fool they make.
See, what attracted me to this illustrious organization,
Was its founders’ determination, the class,
And its high ethical and moral foundation.
Tell me what you’ve got my friend?
Or why your inquiries about my sisterhood seem to never end?
Is it because perhaps you are the one who made a mistake?
Is it because your sisterhood seems to be so fake?
I entreat you to worry about you and yours.
Alpha Kappa Alpha is well-able to follow its own course.
Why? We’ve done it for 100 years!
It wasn’t easy, for it took much blood,
Plenty of sweat, and oceans of tears.
I know that my commitment to this sisterhood
Is a blessing from God, and it should be understood
That anybody who thinks otherwise
Chose to settle for less, which is something I despise.
A-K-A, I pledge to always love thee.
A-K-A, I say proudly, SKEE-WEE!!!!
--Soror Shy, May 15, 2008
I really love to shake my hair.
You see always me see looking good.
I know you really wish you could.
The big thing is, I don’t have to try.
I’m an A-K-A, so I was born FLYY
Your boyfriend really thinks I’m fine.
If I blew him a kiss, he’d soon be mine.
I check my mirror every day,
See haters always look my way.
“Skee-Wee”, I say with head held high
My nose is way up to the sky.
OH YES, I think I’m ALL OF THAT
Those other girls are OH SO WACK
You punch a mirror in front of me?
Girl, SIT DOWN, we know you’re ugly!
You thought that was a cute diss-connection,
HAHAHA trick, you just punched your own reflection!
So what does that mean to lil ole me?
Means I look good, a true, natural BEAUTY!
Oh honey, don’t you realize,
It’s because of my founders you are alive.
So next time you decide to fix your mouth toward A-K-A
Think twice, keep that mouth shut, and let it stay that way!

YES! I'M AN A-K-A and YES! I'm HERE TO SAY...
Greetings! Yeah, yeah I been gone for a minute, but now I'm back with the jump-off! LOL. No seriously. March and yes, April have been hectic. If you can't tell by the name of this post, yes! I am one of the NEWEST members...and OH SO PRETTY soror of the IOTA PHI chapter of ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED! #16 SP '08--Astonishing 39--UAB!
This semester has been HELL! But it is coming to a close in a matter of about 2.5 days. Thank you Jesus. My journey to AKA has not been easy, and I am still trucking, still learning, still absorbing, and still receiving gifts (lol). God has been so good to me. Yes I have flunked a few tests and quizzes this semester, but I haven't flunked any classes, (at least I don't think) and I'm still in ALD with an officer position, and all that good stuff.
Seems like a lot of the folks I went to highschool with ('06) are going GREEK as well! Congrats to Dyron, Brian, and Keisha, and any others I forgot.
But when it's all said and done, I'm ready to go home. I'm tired of school and tired of being in this city. I'm broke, hungry, and annoyed!!! Plus, I'm writing this blog from a computer in the Rast PC lab (UGH!). May 3rd needs to hurry up so I can get the hell out of dodge. It sucks to not have a working computer, I can't put my pics up from probate, the PINKnic or anything...:-(
I'M READY TO GO HOME!
And oh, I didn't mention what went down between me and THAT BOY...but we had some drama, Lord. But every relationship (friendship or otherwise) has its ups and downs, and I'm happy to say we made it through! Thank you, Jesus, because that boy...young MAN does something for my soul, lol. He's good for me...or a good part of my life that if he were to go away, I'd be beyond hurt. Like when we had our situation, I was OUT OF IT! SO SAD and SO DEPRESSED, but I had to hide my feelings from the likes of a nosey bitch. Even still....with him, I believe the roles have been reversed...he likes me "deeper" than I like him now...or maybe that's his whole plan...to make me think that, when in actuality I like him more than I did when we first started talkin...WOW...we been talkin for 6 months...as friends...but with an "understanding"...if that makes any sense. Who woulda thunk??
We're close tho. But not as close as I wanna be. He's my boo...I notice that I look to him for approval on a lot of things, but he doesn't always give it to me. I think that's what I like about him, is that he has his own mind and is not easily swayed by the pu***...
But enough about me and him. Yeah, just wanted to slightly catch you up on the events of my life. Hopefully I will be putting up pictures of me and my 39 soon! BUSY BUSY BUSY!! And liking it, I guess!
Until then, I'll HOLLA and SKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-WEE!
